Exploring Diverse and Culturally Responsive Social Studies Resources at NCSS

At this year's National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) Annual Conference, we had the pleasure of hosting an insightful session titled "Social Studies Uncut: Undiscovered Next Generation Teaching and Learning Resources."

The session accomplished its goal of elevating and amplifying content creators who are dispelling current narratives by exhibiting curriculum that celebrates the fullness and diversity of social studies.

Panelists Andrea Foggy-Paxton, Ebony McKiver, and Evan Gutiérrez from the Accelerator team, along with Steph Manuel from TrueFiktion, led an engaging exploration of future-forward, high-quality, and culturally responsive instructional materials from multiple organizations.

Participants discovered resources that seamlessly embed civic engagement and inquiry-based learning, while also removing fears around teaching culturally responsive content. The materials highlighted the diversity of perspectives and experiences across the social studies.

Through open discussions, attendees gained valuable strategies for integrating these next-generation resources into their classroom practices. The session fostered an appreciation for the importance of representation and culturally authentic narratives in social studies education.

Overall, this NCSS session empowered educators to reimagine their curricula and instruction through an equity-focused lens. We're grateful to the panelists for sharing their expertise and to all attendees who joined us.
